Monumenta Nipponica as a Vital Publication Resource in Japanese Studies
Monumenta Nipponica was founded in 1938 by Sophia University in Tokyo as an English-language academic journal in Japanese Studies, premodern and modern, with an emphasis on the humanities. For over 85 years, it has maintained the highest standards in the publication of research articles, translation, and book reviews. While we move forward in the digital age by making our journal available through comprehensive, multidisciplinary, trusted abstract and citation database such as SCOPUS, Project MUSE and JSTOR, allowing our contributors to reach a global readership, we also maintain the tradition of meticulous peer review as well as multiple steps of editing and revision to publish research in Japanese studies in the highest standard.
The mission of our journal is two-fold: to make scholarship on Japanese Studies written in English available to scholars all over the world, and to make Japanese scholarship accessible to Anglophone readership through translation of original Japanese scholarship. As a result, Japanese Studies will not be limited only to Japan and will be able to reach the world.
This presentation will discuss 1) How we modernize Monumenta Nipponica by utilizing digital connectivity to make Japanese Studies in the humanities widely available and accessible to the world; 2) How we continue to explore the possibilities, limitations, and hazards in the rapid development of AI; 3) How we upheld editorial and publication traditions to maintain the highest standard of publication. This presentation will include a Q&A about the journal for potential contributors and interested researchers.
Monumenta Nipponica: 日本研究における重要な出版リソースとして
Monumenta Nipponica (以下MN) は、人文科学に重点を置いた前近代および現代の日本研究に関する英語の学術雑誌として、1938 年に上智大学によって創刊されました。その後85年以上にわたり、研究論文、翻訳、書評の出版において最高水準を維持してきました。近年では、 SCOPUS、Project MUSE、JSTOR などの信頼性の高い引用データベースやオンラインデータベースを通じてジャーナルを利用できるようにすることで前進するデジタル時代に対応しながら、寄稿者が世界中の読者にリーチできる場として寄与しています。また、最高水準の日本研究論文を出版するために、細心の注意を払った査読と複数回にわたる編集過程の伝統を維持しています。
MNの使命は 以下の2点に集約されます。第一に、英語で著された日本研究論文を世界中の研究者が利用できるようにすること。そして、日本語で著された日本研究やリソースの翻訳を通じて、英語圏の読者が日本の研究やリソースにアクセスできるようにすることです。 その結果、MNが双方向的な学術交流の媒体としての役割を担いつつ、日本研究は日本だけに留まらず世界に発信され、そして、英語による日本研究が世界中の研究者に届くことになります。
今回のプレゼンテーションでは主に以下の3つのテーマにふれます。1) 人文科学における日本研究を広く利用可能にし、世界中からアクセスできるようにするために、MNがどのようにデジタル・コネクティビティー を生かした近代化を進めてきているのか。2) AI の急速な発展における可能性、限界、危険性についてＭＮがどのように対応しようと模索しているのか。 3) 最高水準の出版を維持するために、ＭＮの編集と出版の伝統をどのように維持していくか。
プレゼンテーションに続いて、寄稿者や興味のある研究者からのＭＮに関する Q&A を設けます。
